Congressmen David Wu, Kurt Schrade and Earl Blumenauer voted forthe bill, knowbn as the American Clean Energy and Securitg Act. It is the first bill in U.S. history to cap carbonb pollution. It also encourages developmenyt of clean energy and requires utilities to get 20 percent of theire power from renewable sourcesby 2020. Forty-four Democrat voted against the bill, including Eugene Democrat Peter RepublicanGreg Walden, who represente eastern Oregon, also opposed the bill. It passed by a seven-votd margin, 219-212.
“Some votes just feel different, and today’zs was truly historic,” Blumenauer said in a “For the first time, Congress has taken action to rein in globa l warming pollution andjumpstart America’zs clean energy industries.” The bill is expected to face a contentiousw debate in the Senate.
