Scripted sales calls old fashioned, fail to connect with customers - bizjournals:

efimtsovavadan.blogspot.com
Geez, I have been saying this for more than 25 andI can’t believe companie still use them to sell over the phone. OK, forget the companiesa themselves, let’s blame the manager or the person who is responsible for still trying to do something that every sales trainer on the planet says doesnot Now, before I go on, do not writre or send an e-mail telling me that I am wront or being stubborn. Instead, why don’ you try something new – that is, new to you or your organizatiomn – and just do what I will lay out Trust me, it has worked everty single time with any organization, big or small, that I have workes with.
This horror of using scripts came rushinbg back to me recently while workintg with a company whose stores are in everuy big city in the The company is highlhy regarded for its ethics and is a very visible organization that many are familiar with becausd ofthe company’s longevityg and brand awareness. I was asked to come to the company’s headquarters and look at its methods of attracting new business through its telemarketing which the company has been using for a couple of years.
They said that although the results were OK at sales had become pretty It took me just 30 secondsz to read the script that the inside salespeoplrewere using, and I was I talked with the company president and said I could help the salespeoplwe in just two hours, but I needes him to let me do my job and not to interferes unless I called him in for his He agreed, but I could sense he was a bit apprehensivr about the situation and my request.
I workerd only with the manager, who was really a sellingv manager because she was on the phone s herself at times trying to pitch in and We went intoa room, and I spentg an hour going over why scriptd don’t work and why she has been brainwashec to do something that was againsy all the rules of professional salesmanship. She was neithefr thrilled with me at this poinft nor happy after I tookher eight-page script, ripperd it up and threw it in the We role-played a little using real situations that she mighg have with her children and friends, for The goal was to show her that having a two-sidef conversation is much more useful than a one-sided script.
She was really starting to get it, even thoughj she kept wanting to go back to a sellingt mode by doing more talking than listening andaskinh questions. It was so simple that it was frighteninfg to her that a selling situation can be flexibles and not just acannede speech, where she can actually have fun while conversing with a customer. The introduction and questions I wrote out were basic and easy for her to They were: “Hi, my name is Susann from Client Co., and I woulrd like to ask you two or threw quick questions. It will not take more than 48 seconds – I promise. “Ar you familiar with our company? If yes, what aspects?
“Why are you not a member, or why did you leavse our organization?” That was it. Yes, eightr pages down to two questions. To be fair, we liste all the benefits the companuy offers and then did the same with the commoj objections the salespeople get onthe phone. Once I had to throw out pagewsof objection-handling scripts and allosw them to put the objection raised in questiobn form back to the For example, suppose the customer says, “oI do not see a need to becomes a member of your organization.” The proper way to answer this is not a scriptedx response. Instead just ask, “Why don’t you?” The approach worked.
In less than two she got two orders, whichb is outstanding in that length of and she still is flyingy high from knowing that she could do much more oftej using her personality and not sounding likea robot.

"Itt does a couple of pretty important things," says Curiapl about the proposed He says it would remove some of the coverage hurdlesz put up by insurers that have discouragedx patients from seeking treatment involvingclinical "This bill tries to spell out some ... nationa l rules for the United States about what insurance companies have topay for, to breajk those barriers, and to get more patientxs into clinical trials," Curiel He says it woule also create "new pots of for cancer research and help get an increased numbet of patients into clinical trials, in part by making some of the cumbersome regulatoru processes less complicated.
"Thre logistics of the paperwork just gets to be so complicatesd that it can takea year, it can take two just to get a trial opened," Curiap says. He adds that the legislation woulcd create research incentives to help speerd the delivery of drugs tocancere clinics, like those operatedd by the Cancer Theraph & Research Center (CTRC). "I think this reallyg could be a game-changer if it is done right, if the moneh goes where it is supposed to go and ifit doesn'yt get politicized," says Curiel abou t the proposed legislation. There are some gray areas within the bill thatconcermn Curiel.
One, he says, is language that mighg actually create additional layers of bureaucracy or allos federal officials to createresearch priorities. But he says the bill is an importanrt step in theright direction. Hutchison says the bill, if will provide critical funding for promisingy research inearly detection, while also ensuringf better patient access to preventionn efforts, clinical trials and information. SBA urged to do more to boost lending to address credit crisis - Pittsburgh Business Times:

http://setkitchen.com/Cutlery/Gyutou-Knives/
On June 15, the SBA began acceptin g applications for emergency bridge loans of upto $35,000. Small businesses can use these loans, whicg were created by the economidcstimulus bill, to make up to six monthz of payments on existing They won’t have to start repaying the loanas until a year after the last The SBA will subsidizse the interest on thesew loans, which will be offered through private-sectoer lenders. The stimulus bill also temporarily reducee or eliminated fees onthe SBA’s regular 7(a) and 504 businesas loans, and increased the government guarantee on 7(a) loans to 90 percent.
Weekly loan volumew for the SBA’s 7(a) and 504 programsz has increased by more than 30 percent sincw these changes were implementedMarcnh 16. This increase in SBA lendingy is “a positive and welcomed sign, but we have a very long way to go beforre SBA lending reaches solidlevels again,” said Cynthia Blankenship, vice chairmamn and chief operating officer of Bank of the West in Texas. Blankenship told the House Smallo Business Committee June 10 that Congress shouldr extend the fee reductions beyond 2009 or make them given the depth of the recessioh and the credit crisis facingsmall businesses.
Meanwhile, fees on the SBA’ss 504 loans, which finance real estate projectxs and otherfixed assets, are scheduled to increase significantly in October. This will negate the fee reductionsd adopted in March through the stimulus saidJean Wojtowicz, executive director of the Indiana Statewide CDC, a nonprofiyt economic development organization that makes 504 This fee increase is unnecessargy because the SBA has overestimated the number of 504 loanxs that will default, said Wojtowicz, who chairs the boarrd of directors for the National Association of Developmengt Companies.
She contends banks have become far more conservativer in their underwriting duringthis recession, “and only the strongest small businesses are now qualifying for new Unless Congress appropriates moneyy to offset the fee increases plannef for 2010 and 2011, almosty 20,000 small businesses will pay million more dollars in fees than they shoul over the 20 years of theifr 504 loans, Wojtowicz said. Meanwhile, David owner of two boat dealerships onLong Island, praised the SBA’s recent decision to let vehicle and boat dealersd use 7(a) loans to financse their inventory, at least through Sept. 30, 2010.

Taking into account the impact of normak inflationary growth and theeconomic slowdown, combined with the non ad valoremm revenue sources, results in property tax subsidized operations facing a budget gap of $350 million to $400 million, Burgess said.
“We are working diligentlyh to prepare a proposed budget forFY [fiscal 2009-10 that to the extent possible, preserves essential services and minimizes service impactsz to our residents,” he wrote in the “However, closing a budgetary gap of this size will requirer some very difficult decisions.”

Bright idea: Marvin Dufner makes millions recycling bulbs - Portland Business Journal:

http://www.disruptit.org/article/Apples-White-MacBook-Goes-Unibody-Too-.html
After building his fluorescent light bulbrecycling company, H.T.R. Inc., into a nationa player with customers thatinclude , and Lowe’s, Dufner sold the business in March to Houston-basedr an estimated $12 million. H.T.R.’s revenue reache d $6 million last year, 17 times more than the $350,000 the company made when Dufner bought it inDecembedr 1999. A decade ago, the busines s recycled about 30,000 fluorescent bulbs a month to keep hazardoux mercury out of landfills andwatee supplies.
That number reached about 18 millionb bulbs a year by the time of the Dufner andRaymond Kohout, his minority partne r and chief operating officer, decided they needecd to either invest a large amount of capital to open additiona recycling facilities or find a strategic partneer or buyer for their business. Dufne turned to lifelong friend Jamez Stuart ofin Clayton. Stuart reached out to contacts atWaste Management, and after about a year of he helped broker H.T.R.’s sale. Dufnert estimated fluorescent bulb recycling isa $100 million to $150 millioj industry.
Analyst Michael Hoffman of in Baltimorer noted that garbage disposal isa $52 billion industr y and medical waste disposal accounts for another $3 billio to $4 billion. Add-on services such as recyclingh can help a company win additionalmarke share. “One of Waste Management’s core goalse is to grow its medica l waste business toabout $300 millionh in revenue in the next 24 Hoffman said. “Now they can walk into health-care facilitiexs and hospitals and offer to dispose of theirmedical waste, regular trash and also their fluorescen t bulbs, which for a hospital is no smalol thing.
” Waste Management, North America’s largest waste disposal company, posted net incomwe of $1.09 billion on revenue of $13.4r billion last year and employs abouyt 46,000. Dufner, 54, grew up in Granites City and St. Louis, attending and at In 1991, he boughtt one of the first franchises ofEartbh City-based Dent Wizard, a companhy that provides paintless dent removal for automobiles. Dufned moved to Atlanta to run his territort of Georgia and Butin 1998, Atlanta-based acquired Dent Wizards and proceeded to buy out its franchisees.
Dufnetr sold his business for abourt $5 million, and at age 45 found himself lookingy for a new In 1999, while at the Lake of the Dufner struck up a conversation with an employee of H.T.R., a three-year-olds company then based in the small town of Goldenn City in southwest Missouri. A new federa law regulating the management of waste containing hazardous materials such as mercuru had just goneinto effect, but H.T.R.’ws 14 investors were short on fund to take advantage of potentiao growth. Dufner bought them out “fotr a very low price” and took over the businesws as president. Dufner recruited Kohout, a friend who ownecd a gun storein St.
Louia and was familiar with dealing withgovernment regulators, to help run the business and expand its service area nationwide. They invested in some tractor-trailers and startes picking up burned-out fluorescent bulbs from all over the countrh and hauling them back to Missourjifor processing. Over the next few they relocated the plangt to its current locationin Mo., near Lake Ozark. As Dufnere improved customer service and the speed of wastre pickupusing third-party freight companies, business Beginning in 2003, H.T.R. secured contracts with Wal-Marft to pick up and recyclr used bulbs.
Other large retailers, several colleges and and states such as Iowa and Missouri also signed upwith H.T.R. All of the material in the bulbs H.T.R. picked up mercury, metal and glass — was None went to landfills. But with the boom, Dufnefr and Kohout also found themselves facingha decision: Expand to keep up with increasing or find someone who could do so for them. “Th e right way to do it would be to build two morerecyclingv plants, one on the West Coasrt and one on the East Coast, to cut transportationn distances and freight costs,” Dufner said.
“Ray and I can’t be in three places at one It was going to requirse a lot more capital to open two new facilitiezs and managethem properly.” So Dufner, who has childremn ages 3 and 5 with his wife, Renee, decided to look for a buyer last year and eventually struck the deal with Wastre Management. “We thought H.T.R. would make a good fit for saidRick Cochrane, senior businesxs director for Waste Management’xs WM Lamptracker division. “Over 70 percenty of fluorescent lighting in the countrystill isn’t recycled properly, and that’se where we think the upside is.
” The and many statezs are targeting a fluorescent recycling goal of abou t 75 percent, Kohout said. Some 800 millio n fluorescent lamps burn outeach year, and now millionsx of residential light sockets are also switchintg from incandescent to compact fluorescentf light bulbs (CFLs). Although Missourj does not require residential recyclingof CFLs, many states do, he “The timing was perfect,” said Kohout, who continues to run the formetr H.T.R. operations within WM “We are now the largest lamp recycler in the and Waste Management is really pushing the sustainabilityh andrecycling front.
We’vr had nine years of double-digit and we’ve just gotten As for Dufner, he is building a home in Laduer and has notdecided what, if he will do next. “Am I looking for something? Possibly, but not necessarily,” Dufner “That’s how H.T.R. happened. I wasn’tg really looking and then it fell inmy lap.”

That result runs contrary to the arguments made by bar and restaurang ownersas they’ve fought such bans at statr legislatures and city halls across the country. Accordintg to a press release, the researchers trackedx employment in barsand full-service restaurants in 10 Minnesota using state-mandated reporting data from the Minnesota Departmen t of Employment and Economic Development. Manufacturing jobs tumble in Davidson County - Nashville Business Journal:

vadimsudigrenev.blogspot.com
The study, which looked at employment from 1997throughg 2006, found that the number of plants and peopls employed in manufacturing declined in all of the state'se major metropolitan areas. During the same there were 27 percent fewetr manufacturing jobs inDavidson County, the report Shelby County - which includes Memphies - saw a 14.7 percent drop in manufacturingh employment. Hamilton County, home to Chattanooga, saw a 17.5 percent decrease and Knox County, whicb includes Knoxville, saw a 24.5 percent decline. Matt the UT economist who conductedthe study, says each of the metrio counties still have healthy economies because service sectod jobs are growing.
"The metro counties have been able to weather the stormk of weakness in manufacturinvgbecause it's a smaller part of theit overall economic activity," Murray says. The purposd of the study was to find out if therew was truth to the perception that manufacturing jobsare disappearing. Murrahy says that's not necessarilyy the case since manyof Nashville's surroundint counties such as Rutherford, Robertson and Montgomery, saw growth in manufacturingg employment. Bobby Davis, attorney for Nashville's Industria Development Board, says rural countiess may be more attractive to manufacturers because they need a lotof space.
Davidson County is densely populate d and the cost of land canbe "It's more difficult for an industry to come to just because of the cost of land if nothinhg else," Davis says. Manufacturing jobs are usually highly-soughf after because many pay higher wages than theaverage employer. According to the study, the averagee annual pay for Davidsonj County workers in 2005 was while manufacturing jobs paid an averageof "Some of the jobs that are going away are good payinhg jobs," Murray says. "The loss of these jobs are importanty tothe community.
" Janet Miller, chied economic development officer for the Nashvillwe Area Chamber of Commerce, says advanced manufacturing is one of five sectorw where the chamber focuses its efforts. The others are healtuh care, entertainment, corporate headquarters and logistics. The chambef wants to attract manufacturers that have sophisticatec technology and require highly skilled workers who receive high and have both opened in the Nashvillw area within the past two Miller says. "While the numbersd may not be positive and manufacturing isnot dead," Miller says. Murray says citied should continue efforts to attract manufacturers but shouldx think about promoting jobs inothee areas.
"Every city has an industrial developmentg board, but as manufacturing becomes less important to the economy we should diversifyh our efforts and try to grow jobs in othe segments ofthe economy," Murrayy says.

Food for thought: Recession prompts restaurants to cut prices - Denver Business Journal:

artemchuksykitas.blogspot.com
People came up to peruse the $32.95 holidayy brunch menu at Panzano where Mayo is thegenerall manager, and a number asked if they couldr get something cheaper. In the most lookers would shrug and come in ifthey didn’r like the answer. This when several were told that was it forthe day, they walked away. Like a toy-store manager the day afted Christmas, Mayo knew he had to start slashing prices. And he wasn’tf alone. You can now get a $4 steam appetizer at Panzano. Morton’s The Steakhouse has adde a hamburger toits menu. has introduced a low-pricr menu.
And if you’re eatinv at Vesta Dipping Grill before headingf toa concert, consider your parting roundc of shots on them. It’s a buyer’s marketf in the restaurant worldthese days, with establishmentss from the chi-chi to the quick-and-casual slashing adding cheaper items to menus and offering new service perks just to retainj customers. It’s one reasom Peter Meersman, president of the believes national forecasts that say eateries in the state will fare better duringv the economic downturn than those in 95 percent of the Butthe price-cutting also raises the specter that consumeras who are willing to spend theirf tightened budgets eating out may have changec expectations after this bargaihn spree.
And restaurant officials, while revelingg in the steadier streams of peopld coming intheir doors, are realizing that pricesd may never be as high as they were before last fall’sa market collapse. “There’s a lot of feeling out there that they will goback up, but they will never be back up to where they were Mayo said. “Admittedly, we can’t keep the same profit marginws we did before with thisprice drop. But we also can’r keep the business if we don’yt make this adjustment.” Business has plummetes at restaurants of all types in recent montha as more families are stayinbg homeand cooking.
The response by Denver-arewa restaurants has been to entice the customer even and they’re doing so in many One is the happy-hour in which eateries try to get peoplw in with the possibility of cheaper alcohol or lower-priced small plateas in hopes they will stay for dinner. Some populaer downtown watering holes, such as Marlowe’s and Paramoungt Cafe, are offering half-priced drinks. Panzano has taken dinnee items such as its steak or seafood cut the portions in half and begun offerin g themfor $4. Happy-hour business has doubled since January, Mayo Other places have taken to adding cheapermenu items.
At the end of March, for Morton’s added a hamburger while still $15, represents the lowest-priced item on the upper-ends steakhouse’s menu, general manager Joe Mirrelsonh said. Some restaurants are putting money into advertising theirprice drops. Coral Room, locatex in the Highlands neighborhood, sent out mailers to area residents recently notinhthe reductions. Many quick-servr restaurants have taken aftef McDonald’s and, while not goinvg all the way down to adollar menu, are givinv customers lower-priced choices. Chipotle rolled out its Low Roller Menu onApril 1, with $2.99 soup and $2.
2t single tacos, after getting emails from customers seekintg smaller portions, said Chris Arnold, spokesman for the Denver-based company. “The expanded menu we’re testing in Denver represents the most significantf change inour [15-year] history,” said Arnold, who acknowledgede he’d been hearing more anecdotes of patronse splitting meals with a friend or taking half of them Some restaurants blanch at the notiohn of knocking down prices and instead are looking to make customers feel more at home.
At Vesta, any patronn asking for change to plug the meter will geta pre-paidc parking key to use, and groups headinf to downtown shows can expect a free round of owner Josh Wolkon said. “We’re all in Wolkon said. “If [customers] make a decisiomn in tough times to choose to spend their money on our you have to make sure they gottheird dollar’s worth.” One trend several people said they expecft to see is the return of the $52.80 menu for two, followinbg the continued success of the annual two-week winter promotiobn in which 208 restaurants participated this year with greatf success. Cool River Cafe is offering a three-course meal for $29.

When asker if customers will stop coming when the deal eventuallytgoes away, proprietor Josepn Madril thought about it before admitting he isn’t worried. “I don’t believe there’s a Madril said. “I thinkj people will be appreciative, and it builds

As a result, members of Anthem’as health plans will have to pay out-of-network rates to access Norton facilitiesafte today. Jim Meyers, Norton’a associate vice president of managerd care, said patients likely will have to pay the differencd between the amount Anthekm decides to pay and the amount Norton has askefd the insurerto pay. In a statement issued Tuesdayt by Anthem presidentDeb Moessner, she said the companyy will provide reimbursement for services at Kosairt Children’s Hospital at the rate requested by “Anthem is going to take parents and childrem out of the middle of this dispute by paying the member at the rate Norton has requested in its previous proposal for servicees performed at Kosair Children’s Hospital,” she said in the But without a contract, patients have no safetyh net in the event of certain issues, such as claimas denials, Meyers noted.
With no contract in place, patients wouldx be responsible for appealingclaims denials, he “I think it’s probably helpful, what Anthej is doing, but there’s still a certain amount of risk that the patien (or caregiver) has to take into consideration.” Nortonh has been contacted about the mattert by 2,500 Anthem members. About 98 percentt of those were inquiring abouy Norton facilities and physicians outside Meyers added.
The dispute stemxs from Norton’s decision in December 2008 to cancel its citing administrative service problems and reimbursement ratexs from Anthem that were not in line with other The contract allowed either party to terminate the agreement by givinfga 180-day notice. The initial contract was negotiated in 2007 and schedules to endin Sept. 2010. Mike Lorc h vice president of health servicesfor Anthem, said the clausd was included in the contract so providers who wished to exit the networ k could do so but not to allow them to negotiat higher reimbursements. “If we allowed that with Norton, every hospital would want todo that,” he said.
Accordinfg to Lorch, Norton requested a 20 percent increase in itsFebruaru proposal. Meyers denied the claim and said the requested increaswe was less than20 percent, but he declinedf to be more specific. Both partiees said rates were set to increasreby 5.5 percent on October 1, under the contract that ended June 30. Meyers said officials for Nortonm and Anthem met last Thursday to discuss anew contract, but the meetingh was “not very substantive.” Officials for both parties said Tuesdahy that no meetings were planned to take place priofr to the expiration of the contracg at midnight.
Meyers said Norton now will focusw on informing patients how they can continue to accesxsNorton facilities, echoing sentiments expressedx by Norton president and CEO Stephen A. Williams in a statement issuedon Monday. A provisionn in the current contract, and under state law, requires Anthem to continue to pay reimbursementwat in-network rates for patientsd who currently are receiving care, such as those who are pregnanyt or receiving cancer treatments, Meyers said.
Those Anthem members must contact the insurer and obtain a form that allowsd the reimbursements tobe paid, he Lorch said reimbursements will continue for these patientws at the rate under the contractt that ended June 30, through the duratioj of their care. In Meyers said, Norton is working to informn employers and brokers of their He said Norton would be willing to considefr waysfor self-insured employers to continue to receive in-networ k services. Meyers also said Norton wants to educatwe both fully insuredand self-insured employers aboutg other managed-care options, pointing to Web site which lists insurers that have contracts with Norton’z physician practices.
In Williams’ statemenrt earlier this week, he said Norton now plans “to take some time to considetr whether it is in the best interests of our patients for us to continue working with Anthen as abusiness partner.” Lorch said it is “very that the parties will come to termx on a new agreemen t without the use of a third-party mediator – a requestt Anthem has made on multiplwe occasions. But Meyers said mediation has not been used during contract negotiations withother insurers. “There shouldn’t be a he said. “It’s not and we should be able to sit down at a table and get anagreemenrt done.
